Description
Join Commonwealth Wine School for a two-day, action-packed, grape growing, wine tasting, educational extravaganza this July 26th and 27th. With special access to some of the most renowned properties on Long Island, we will explore the terroir and diversity of this extraordinary region. Meeting with growers and wine makers, visiting their properties and wineries, we will sample some great American wines.
Departing together each morning from the Hyatt Place in beautiful Riverhead, NY, each day includes in-depth tours, talks, presentations and activities. Lunches and dinners will be provided. You will be a Long Island wine expert and disciple by the end of this trip!
Long Island, NY is home to some of the most elegant and intriguing wines to be made in the United States today. With serious investment in viticulture beginning in the 1970s, growers and wine makers on Long Island have been experimenting with grape varieties and refining their wines for decades. With its maritime climate that benefits from the warming Gulf Stream, it’s no surprise that Long Island has embraced the traditional Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc among others. But with no legal requirements specifying which grapes must be planted and hundreds of acres under vine, Long Island is able to ripen a wide array of grape varieties (over 25!) that also include Chardonnay, Albariño, Gewürtztraminer, and Friulano. In fact, spectacular examples of traditional-method Sparkling wines (think Champagne style), oak-aged reds, lively and crisp whites, and seductive dessert wines are easy to find.
