Important Government Affairs Issue in Cambridge - ALERT

We want to inform our membership of a very controversial policy that is currently being considered by the City Council.

The proposed ordinance would effectively prohibit the use of natural gas in all new residential and commercial buildings in Cambridge.  In addition, it would prohibit the continued use of natural gas in all commercial or residential structures that are undergoing significant rehabilitation.  This includes residential modifications of single and multi-family homes.
The Life Science sector, academic research, and small businesses sector - including restaurants - would be affected significantly by this ordinance.  We believe this extreme measure would also have a major chilling effect on the development of new housing in our City.

Yesterday, the Ordinance Committee took the unusual step of forwarding this proposal to the full City Council after only one hearing.  The Chamber supports the City’s efforts to combat the footprint of carbon emissions.  Many members of the business community continue to devote significant time and resources to help address the significant environmental challenges we face.  However, this proposed ordinance has not been properly vetted and is not the solution.

We would encourage our members to share their concerns on this extreme proposal with the City Council members before it is too late.

We will keep you updated regarding this important issue.
